5 Times Messed Up

'Give me a drink' she said. Jesus replied, If thou knewest the 'gift of God' and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water (John 4:1-42).

If you knewest the gift of God (v10). Look at that again. The gift of God! not the gift God gives but the one who is the Gift. The gift of 'God.' God himself is the gift, for God is spirit. If you knew this gift. That when a man or woman has 'God' his ghost, his life, God himself, the holy Ghost, one has 'life.' In him is life and outside of him there is just a mere existance.

Then she began to tell him about her life, 'Sir I have no husband.' Jesus said, 'I know you have had five husbands'(v18). Jesus deliberately led the woman into a conversation about her husband because he wanted to give both her and us a powerful spiritual truth. Here it is. If a woman had been married once and divorced she was thought to be cursed but if she was married five times, she was seen as one who had a prophetic call or high service as a prophetess. No wonder Jesus looked beyond the situation and into her calling. For a prophetess was allowed to talk to a man in public and he confirmed back to her in a prophetic tone, 'I know you have five husbands,' and in so doing was literally stating, ' I know your failures but I see beyond that. I know your sufferings but I see beyond that too. I have a reward for you.

How different that is today from legalists who will judge and point the finger and those who have failed maritally. Jesus was stating that his gift is not for the holy, those who have all things together, those who live perfect lives, those who are blameless and faultless for if Jesus can give this woman to drink then theres hope for you and hope for me.

Jesus sees a gift. Your past is no barrier to the Holy Ghost. You have been hounded because you had a special call on your life. Five messes, five times went wrong. Now God says, this time it's all going to be fine because you found me the giver of real life. That's why you cant quit! Jesus sees beyond the gutter and into the gift.

Receive ye the holy Ghost. God himself is his gift to you...Today! (Acts 2:38).
